Vintage Rolex Red Submariner 1680
By Paul Altieri
Rolex introduced the reference 1680 around 1969 and it was in production until roughly 1979. This was the first Submariner to feature the date function and Rolex still offers date and no-date models to this day. This example has the word "Submariner" written in red text and collectors refer to these as the "Red Submariner." Rolex did this until around 1975 and then they switched to all white text. Collectors tend to gravitate towards these Red Subs and we have seen demand increase significantly in the last couple years.
This example comes with box and punched papers which is always nice. The outer box even has a little "1680" sticker on it with a black dot (for the black dial) indicating this is the right box for the reference. also the punched papers have the original caseback sticker stuck on it; something we have seen before - we love these little details!
Collectors have identified six different "mark" or variations in the Red Submariner and this watch has a mark V dial. The mark V dial is distinguished by the feet first depth rating with open 6s that and red Submariner text painted directly onto the dial. The open 6s on this Mark dial are not as pronounced as the Mark IV dials and may need a loupe to see that they aren't connected.
